Thassos Island

History, beauty and blue magic

Thassos is the island of light and emerald sea — a place where nature paints turquoise bays, golden beaches and olive groves that reach the water. Called the “Emerald Island”, it impresses with over 50 beaches, many awarded the Blue Flag for cleanliness, safety and crystal-clear waters.

History and legends

Since antiquity Thassos has been known for its marble, wine and honey. Legends say Dionysus himself set foot here, and ancient Thracians and Greeks left temples, theatres and artifacts that still guard the spirit of the past. In the old town and archaeological museum you can see more than 3,000 years of history — from antique statues to Roman mosaics.

Landmarks

Among the most impressive sights is Aliki — an ancient sanctuary complex and fortress on a rocky peninsula with turquoise waters. Stone paths, white rocks and the view of two bays make the place truly magical. The island is also dotted with small white churches and monasteries, such as the Monastery of Archangel Michael perched above the sea, and the historic Church of St. Athanasius in Panagia — symbols of spirituality and quiet.

Beauty in contrasts

The island’s beauty lies in contrasts — turquoise water, white rocks, olive groves and mountain peaks rising above the sea. Beaches such as Golden Beach, Paradise, Aliki and Marble Beach are known for their vivid colours, while the small coves of the eastern coast are a true paradise for those seeking calm and romance.

Kinira

Kinira is a small but charming village on the beautiful eastern coast of Thassos, 18 km southeast of Limenas. It sits in a quiet setting with wonderful landscapes and wins visitors’ hearts — they return again and again to enjoy the view. Directly opposite lies the tiny island of Kinira with steep rocky shores, covered in pine forests, adding extra charm to the scenery.
